Although the terms motels and hotels are sometimes used interchangeably these days, their definitions were originally quite different.

Etymology (origin) of the term motels: A blend of "motor" and "hotel" to denote an establishment that provides lodging for motorists in rooms usually having direct access to an open parking area, as guest generally arrived via automobile. Also originally called a motor court or motor lodge.

The term hotels is derived from the French word "hostels" meaning an establishment that provides lodging and usually meals, entertainment, and various personal services for the public.
